Not too long ago, I found myself in a battle. But the thing was… I wasn’t wearing the armor of God.
I wore my own armor, and I was far from the victory I knew I could have in Christ.
So I set out to put on the right armor. It was time to dive into God’s word- a full on armor of God study.

3 Things that were Important to me
The armor of God is one of those subjects that I’ve always been aware of. You know- a subject that we were taught in Sunday school and vacation bible study. I had a basic understanding of each piece of armor, but I wanted more. I wanted to know how to truly live victoriously.
As I set out to do my own armor of God study, I wanted to know the following things:
The Historical Context
In our time and culture, we are so far removed from understanding what war is like. We have a basic understanding of the functions of armor, but I knew going into this study that I needed a broader historical context. I needed to understand what the Ephesians already understood about armor. There were bits of truth that they would have just understood and been able to apply because of the time and culture they were a part of. When I started my armor of God study, I was thirsty for those bits of truth!
The Biblical Context
It’s easy to look at the words “truth”, “righteousness”, “peace”, etc. and think we understand what they mean. I wanted to make sure that as I studied those words, I didn’t just brush over them based on my understanding, or even based on tradition. The spiritual elements attached to each piece of armor are so deep. They are themes that truly span the entirety of the bible. I knew that if I wanted to stand firm, I needed to dive into the biblical context for my armor of God study.
The Spiritual Impact
I strongly believe what God’s word says about spiritual warfare. I’m convinced more than ever that we are in a war. And that this war is against the spiritual forces of this world. I think it is easy to dismiss this truth as something that is true, but not really personally relevant. In starting my armor of God study it was vital to me that I found resources that had a good grasp on the reality of spiritual warfare and the impact it has on our daily lives.
What I Discovered
What I found was a bit overwhelming. This study was so much bigger than I expected it to be. As I looked up commentaries and listened to sermons, I was finding pieces of each of the three things I desired to learn about, but it never seemed to be all in one place.
I felt like it was going to take more time than I had. It seemed like it was a project that was much bigger than I had planned for.
But each of the things I desired to learn about were so important, so I pressed on.
As I did, I began to talk to friends about what I was learning. One friend suggested I read The Armor of God study by Priscilla Shirer. She loaned me the book and I fell in love!
It had everything I was looking for! And more!
Priscilla does such a great job describing the historical context. She outlines what the armor of that day was like in such a way that I felt like I could see it. She ties that into its spiritual significance SO well!
As far as biblical context, again, there was way more than I even knew. She ties in themes and makes connections that I never thought about and didn’t come across in my study leading up to finding the book.
Each chapter is filled with a really grounded understanding of spiritual warfare. I felt like not only was I able to understand spiritual warfare better, but Priscilla designed the book in such a way that I couldn’t help but apply it to my own life.
The Armor of God book is a 7-week study of the armor of God. Each week focuses on a different piece of armor, with the last week focusing on prayer. Every week is broken into 5 days.
Each day is rich with content, and equally full of reflective questions. There is ample space to write in and answer the questions as well as space in the margins to take notes. There are prayer cards at the back of the book that can be removed and used for very practical prayer strategies in our lives.
Even though each day is PACKED with truth, the book is still very easy to read.
Priscilla’s writing is very relatable and encouraging.
Overall, I was extremely impressed by this book. I really didn’t think I would find a resource that encompassed all that I was looking for! But I did!
And that’s why I bought my own copy and am encouraging you to do the same! (Simply click on the image below to order your copy.)
The reason I would love for you to purchase your own copy is because I want to study this book with YOU!
I’m thrilled to announce that next week (Monday, January 29th) we will be starting our study together! I’ll be posting every Friday a brief synopsis and takeaway for the week.
