The God of Second Chances?
Lately I’ve been hearing this a lot:”I’m so thankful God is a god of second chances”
“Did you know that God gives second chances? Call 1-800…. to talk about Jesus”
It’s a common phrase… but is it true?
Does He really give us a “fresh start”?
I don’t know about you all, but I don’t think I’d do anything better with a “second chance” than I did with the first. And if I had to receive a second chance, I would have had to receive an innumerable amount more. Am I right?!
Now don’t get me wrong, I understand the sentiment behind the phrase. People are trying to convey that no matter how lost in our sin we are, God will always offer forgiveness. He will always offer new hope… new life. But I think it is so easy to lose sight of the power of the cross in our culture. And in our works-based society, such subtle incorrect ways of thinking can be dangerous.
Let us cling to the truth of the gospel. What Christ did on the cross was final. It was complete- not another chance to “add up”, another opportunity to prove ourselves. The cross was a complete exchange.
Christ’s life for mine.
Christ’s righteousness not mine.
A new heart.
A new mind.
An inheritance transferred directly to us. We belong to a new family.
By grace. Through faith. NOTHING we did to obtain it. NOTHING we can do to maintain it.
I’m so glad that Christ’s work on the cross is final. I’m so glad God is much more than a god of second chances!
When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
