Are you weary of your God-given purpose?
Maybe God has made pretty clear some things that He wants you to do. You started by seeking Him and serving Him and now you are able to use the gifts, passions and talents God gave you to better glorify Him. (Struggling to find YOUR purpose? Start HERE.)
When you started the task of doing the thing God asked you to do… it was exciting. You felt alive and had all kinds of energy to devote to it. Everything about it just clicked. Sure, it was a lot of hard work, but it was thrilling. You were able to use so many things that you like and are good at, and for God? It was all worth it!
Now, some time has passed and you are still doing the thing God gave you to do. You are still working hard. But you are just tired. Tired of this “purpose” God has given you.
Does this sound familiar to you?
I was Excited
It’s very familiar to me. You see, not too long ago, this is exactly where I was. I started Becoming Kiona in April of 2017. There were so many things in my life that lead me and equipped me to start this blog.
I have always loved writing and especially loved writing to inspire. Poetry, letters, stories… anything to get to the heart of a reader. Just as much as I loved writing I also loved photography. Even though I didn’t know to call it this when I first started, I enjoyed creating graphics to go with photography. I’ve dabbled here and there with business and am so inspired by it! (Read here to see if YOU are interested in business.)
Oh, and people. I can’t leave out my passion for understanding people’s stories and empowering people to be all that they were created to be. (Of course, those weren’t the exact words I would have used!)
And when you add all of this to my story of my broken identity (read about it here) and my journey to understand and walk in all that God created me to be (and here), it just all came together. Well… let’s be honest… it didn’t just all come together, but as I walked step by step with the Lord, He lead me and eventually I was doing something that I absolutely LOVED!
Blogging made me come alive in so many ways. It was something that I could pour hours upon hours into and still feel energized at the end of it all. I loved every aspect of it… I really did!
Then I was Weary
But then at some point… I became tired.
The goals I had set for myself had been reached. I had accomplished more than I expected to, and I was in a familiar rhythm with all of the regular tasks blogging required.
And one day I looked up and found myself weary and discouraged.
I knew that God was asking me to do EVEN MORE with the blog than I was currently doing, and I just didn’t know how I would. The energy that once sustained me was just gone…
I still enjoyed writing… still enjoyed creating graphics… still enjoyed connecting with people. But that motivation that drove me to do more and more and more just didn’t seem to be there.
I was doing God’s Will without God
Do you know what I discovered? Somewhere along the way, I slowly but surely began doing what God has called me to do (my God-given purpose) but without God.
How is that possible? I’m writing about Him. Talking about Him. Praying for the people that I was ministering to… but the power that came from walking this journey out with Him step by step was not there.
Somewhere along the way I started to do things on my own. Decisions about blog posts. Decisions with my time. Even my emotions. I was processing it all by myself. Trying to handle it by myself.
I had stopped inviting God into the process of it all. And let me tell you, this left me exhausted and very discouraged. Worn out, with very little energy to give to THE LORD.
Unless the Lord builds the house,
those who build it labor in vain.
Unless the Lord watches over the city,
the watchman stays awake in vain.
I had to refocus
And you see… this was the solution to it all.
The PURPOSE that God gave me… was not the end goal. Giving God the glory is ALWAYS the end goal of the tasks He gives us to do.
And our enemy? He knows that. And he will do everything possible to get our focus off of the glory of God. He will do everything possible to turn our focus back to ourselves. Back to doing things in our own strength and for our own glory.
Because giving our lives over for the glory of God? It’s an INCREDIBLE thing.
It’s an AMAZING and beautiful adventure that really can’t be compared to anything else.
When we focus on the glory of God, lives are changed.
When we focus on giving God the glory, our eyes are opened more and more to His splendor, majesty, power, love… (the list can go on and on).
And knowing God? Jesus says that is what eternal life is! (John 17:3)
I was re-energized
It wasn’t until I finally understood that I had lost focus on giving God the glory, that I understood that HE would be the one to empower my journey.
You see, God really does want to use us in powerful ways. He wants to take our broken stories, our weaknesses, our inabilities and turn them into an incredible, powerful, redeemed story that points back to Him.
He WILL do the impossible in our lives to make His name famous. You see… He cares about His glory.
Because of that, I don’t have to do the task He has given me on my own. HE will do what I can’t…. and I can rest in that.
That gives me courage for the journey. Knowing that my blog (and every other thing He asks me to do for Him) is for His glory and will be sustained by Him alone restores my energy. Remembering WHO this life is all about gives me the strength to lay it all down for the Him.
Have YOU become weary of your God-given purpose?
When it came to my blog, I had become weary, thinking I had to carry out the mission God had given me by myself. I lost sight of the glory of God and it made this journey so exhausting. Are you in this place? Here are 4 things you can do:
- Evaluate – Take some time to evaluate the purpose/mission God gave you. Remember when He called you to it and why He called you to it. Ask God to show you if you’ve become weary and in what ways that is affecting your life. Ask Him to reveal if you have been doing things on your own, or if you have lost sight of His glory.
- Refocus on the glory of God- Remember who God is. Remember how great a God you serve. Take time to reflect on what He has done for you. Recall why you decided to follow Jesus with everything you have.
- Invite Him back into your purpose- Ask the Lord to give you wisdom for every aspect of what He has called you to. Invite Him walk with you in every step of the process.
- Keep doing what God wants you to do- Keep going! The work that you are doing for the kingdom MATTERS. God will give you what you need! Trust Him to do His part and keep doing yours! He WILL get the glory!
And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.
