I recently talked with a friend about the importance of mamas doing things that are outside of the realm of dishes and diapers and everything family related. It was a good and inspiring conversation and I thought it might be a good idea to blog about it. A couple of days later, another friend posted an amazing and inspiring post on facebook about her story and how she learned importance of investing in herself and how it has positively affected those around her. Yes! I knew I had to write about it. It is SO important. Mamas, it is good to invest in yourself!
It is hard. There is no denying that being a mama is a 24/7 job that demands our attention, our emotions and our time. I know I find myself running from one thing to the next to the next to the next when it comes to my duties as a wife and mother. What I’ve come to learn is that this is the very reason we mamas must take time to invest in ourselves.
So what does this look like? To my friend who wrote the facebook post, part of investing in herself looked like taking time to exercise. It looked like spending money she wouldn’t normally spend on nutrition that made her feel good.
For me, this blog has been part of my investment. I generally write in the morning hours before my kiddos wake up. This time for me has been CRUCIAL. There is such a big difference in how our day goes if I have not taken the time to do something that is completely unrelated to my children, home, or hubby.
What is it for you? Is it time at the gym? Maybe time at the coffee shop with a friend? Or maybe it’s that thing you are passionate about? Do you feel a nudging to mentor that girl down the street? Work on that business idea you’ve been sitting on for a long time? What does that investment look like for you?
Return on Investment
When you figure out what that investment is, I know you will see the benefits! Three things happen in my home when I have taken the time to invest in myself.
- I’m A Happy Mama— Yes it’s true. My general outlook on life is a lot better when I have taken some time for myself. My mornings start with doing something that I’m passionate about, so when the kids wake up, I’m already excited. I feel good. God has laid out a vision for me, and blogging for me is part of walking in and toward that vision. And I LOVE IT!
- I Have Confidence— Not only do I have a generally more positive perspective, but taking time to invest in myself also grows my confidence. Mamas, how many of you know that in parenting sometimes it is hard to see progress? When you are in the day in and day out of teaching and pouring into your children, sometimes it is hard to see that we are making a difference. Now of course we are, but for me, pursuing something that has measurable progress has helped me grow in confidence. When I can see growth and feel that I’ve accomplished something for my blog, I naturally have more confidence in my ability to handle things at home. Not to mention, that little time to myself grows me in my ability to know my strengths and weaknesses. (Which then positively affects my ability to parent.)
- I Become A Positive Example for my Kids— We want our children to be all that they were created to be, right? Well of course one of the biggest ways we can teach them that is to model it. We have to be all that God created us to be here and now. It is so important for our children to see us doing things that are not related to them. Not only will they have a bright and shining example of a unique individual that walks in the gifting and purpose God has given her, but they will also grow in their ability to see that not everything is about them. It teaches them to value us as individuals and value themselves as individuals as well.
All of that being said, there is SO much in this world that can take our attention away from the responsibility we have to our family. This week I have learned this in a very hard way. There is a time and a place to invest in ourselves. There is a way to do that in which our WHOLE FAMILY benefits. But there are also A LOT of false investments out there. Facebook, T.V., phones. All promising a bit of relaxation. A bit of me time. A distraction from the hardships of daily life. Or maybe your tendency is to over-commit? You are a part of every committee you can be, every ministry possible? You say yes to every invitation to spend time with friends?
BE ON GUARD!
If your “investment” is negatively impacting your family, please evaluate whether it is an investment at all. If you want more information about how to discern the difference between a true investment and a false investment, please comment below, and I’ll write a separate post about it.
My challenge to you today is to take time to ask God what He wants you to do. Ask Him what true investment He wants you to add to your life and what false investments He wants you to weed out. And then OBEY! I know you will see the return on investment in your life! 🙂
