Yesterday my husband and I celebrated 3 years of marriage.
What do I want to say about three years of marriage with this man? I could tell you about all the hardship we have been through in such a short amount of time. I could tell you about what we’ve learned about love. I could tell you about the joy of adding to our family. I could tell you about our favorite memories. I could tell you about how much we’ve changed… but I think I’ll tell you about how our marriage began. I’m so blessed to have started our marriage with 3 vital things.
1. A Vision
God gave Travis a vision – even while we were dating, I knew that God had given Travis an insight into my heart that only my husband could have. He creatively cast the vision he had been given into my heart with gifts, words, projects and more. He even elaborately designed our engagement to day to remind me to put on the full armor of God (that will be another blog post for another day). Throughout our marriage, I have seen Travis’ vision for our family come to fruition more and more, but it all started in the beginning.
Our wedding day was such a peaceful one, and I know that couldn’t have happened without the community around us. Our bridal party was a huge part of that community. We really wanted the people standing with us to be people who had invested in us individually and as a couple. We wanted people we could count on to stand with us beyond our wedding day. Those same people surrounded us in prayer all throughout the day. We also were so grateful for all the witnesses to our marriage- our family and friends in the crowd who came to support us and hold us accountable to the vows we made. Our marriage also started with our pastor, a big part of our community, who had committed to walking closely with us through our first few years as one. (And that he has!)
Our whole wedding day was interwoven with worship. We sang unto the Lord before the ceremony. We made melody unto the Lord during the ceremony. We prayed and gave glory to the Lord after the ceremony. Even as we settled in for our first night as a married couple, my husband led us to have our minds set on the Lord.
I am so blessed by the way our marriage began- with a vision, with community, and with worship. And in the time since then, these are the things that have grounded us in times of chaos– vision and direction from the Lord, community, and worship. And in our uncertain, unpredictable future, these are the things I pray we lean on. I pray we lean on Travis listening to and receiving vision from the Lord and me following him in that vision, people who love us and will direct us to the Lord. and an unwavering commitment to glorify the Lord in all that we do.
